Discussion/Paper:
The following fomat of questions is used for both discussion of the гeadings in class and how the paper is to be written. Questions for in-class discussion of the readings and for the paper. All class discussions are сentered on three questions.
1. What kind of document is it? And what does the reading contain? List the thoughts, sentiments, ideas the document contain. The answer to this question is essentially a detailed summary of the content of the reading. What are the main points the author is making, and especially, which American cultural ideas are being noted. Do not include your comments in question 81. [9pts.]
2. What do you think about the contents of this document? Make a list of your reactions to these contents. How would you evaluate these thoughts, sentiments, ideas? More important, are they helpful in giving you a historical sense of American beliefs and ideals? (You might consider it/how the reading gives you insight on the feeling or thinking of the writer or the еxperiences/times he describes. Or if you have understood a new detal about the situation being described that you did not already know or imagine? Please note, that “valuable” or “insightful” does not mean “theе moral of the story.”) End question #2 by saying which, if апy, American cuitural ideas are implied?/9pts.]
3. 3. How do the cuitural ideas in this document a) relate to an event/policy/development discussed in either Heffner’s text or the lectures; and b) explain which aspect of this historical context the reading illustrates. (Be specific as to the historical events and cuitural ideas that this particular document/reading addresses.) This question asks you to set the reading in the context of American cultural history. (You can ask yourselif a couple of questions such as: What is the “bigger picture” that this reading is describing? Or “Vwhy does this reading even take place?”) YOU MUST REFER TO THE ARGUMENT IN EITHER THE LECTURES OR HEFFNER’S DISSCUSSION OF THE ISSUE -Le., refer to it- for determining the historical context of the reading. (15pts.]
Definitions for event/policy/develорment: Developnents are long-term action or historical change that occur over long periods motivated by ideas, beliefs, changes in technologies, or territorial expansion and war, and that, when implemented in society. might lead to new political, еconomic, or social systems, perthaps even the creation of new social classes or different ways of thinking or organizing society. Some examples of these long-term, persistent story lines/ historical patterns –usually conficted-in a nation’s cutural history,.” are “еxpansion/frontier theme”; “political ideology or political style” (democracсу, ideals/concepts Piberty/equality, political’class consciousness, elections, federalism: “concept of one nation/nationalism”: “concept of universality/brotherthood” Ination of immigrants/meiting pot; “еconomic ideology” piberalism, free trade, imperialism/isolationf cutural style/manners (religion, slavery/ racism, individualism}; “intellectual/’scientific/echnological development” industrialization, rationalism).
Policies are statements of governmental proposals or specific plans about dealing with particular issues.
Events are discrete occurrences within a specific time-frame with a clear beginning and end. Examples include wars, revolutions, elections, treaties, terms of offce of public officials, laws, rulings, decisions leading to action taken by individuals or groups whether in a public or private сарacity, and generally the kinds of everyday occurrences that one usually studies as “historical events,”
Length and style of the paper
Length: I am interested in completeness more than in length; some readings will have a longer content paragraph than others, but I do not see how you can answer these questions in less than at least two pages. I want a serious consideration of the contents, not just a mention, as well as a serious reaction.
Style: the answer to question onе can be itemized (a, b, c..). You don’t need introductory paragraphs because you are answering already posed questions, not justifying why you are writing about a particular topic. You can also itemize in questions two and three if that helps you3 in fact, I would prefer it because then you are better aware of which points you are making and not getting lost in your own prose.
Finally, the paper is graded on the basis of 100 points (рoints per reading are proportionate), so it is in your best interest to do three readings and to answer the questions completely.
