This paper should aim to show evidence of their critical engagement with the ideas and arguments advanced in the text/s.
This writing assignment is an in-depth analysis examining one historical work in relation to a contemporary work of art. You will be expected to answer a set of questions, such as:
Who created it?
What is its purpose?
Who is it for?
What information do you expect this object can provide about the past in terms of inter-relationships?
How might this object testify to contact between cultures?
What informed your responses to the above question (i.e. comparison to 21st century culture; 21st century views of historical relations; and how cultures view each other, etc.).
Students should try to understand the ways in which perspectives have shifted over time and finding common ground in aesthetic devices used by artists to achieve a particular end.
Students will use a compare and contrast methodology, explaining historical and contemporary context, in addition to a visual analysis looking to the devices the artists deployed in their work.
