An 8-12 pp. interpretative essay examining how one of the following films
enhances or distorts our understanding of particular historical eras or events
Army of Shadows (dir. Jean-Pierre Melville, France, 1969)
Lawrence of Arabia (dir. David Lean, Britain, 1962)
Germinal (dir. Claude Berri, France 1993)
Black Robe (dir. Bruce Beresford, Canada, 1991)
Farewell, My Concubine (dir. Chen Kaige, China, 1993)
Black and White in Colour (dir. Jean-Jacques Annaud, France, 1977)

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (dir. Michael Powell, Britain, 1944)
Oh, What a Lovely War! (dir. Richard Attenborough, Britain, 1969)

To pose questions and develop the argument of your paper you will need to do some
background reading. This is not meant to be a full-fledged research paper, but you ought to
look at a few books, journal articles, and on-line sources to contextualize and interpret the film. You may also want to look for reviews of the film and texts on film history and cinematic
technique. Try to identify how genre conventions and cinematic technique shape the film’s
content; discuss where the film depicts (or departs from or defies) historical “fact” (as
established consensus among specialist historians). How much historical verisimilitude does the
film have, and what contributes to or subtracts from that? Don’t get bogged down trying to
retell the entire story arc of the film; it wastes too much time, and you’re writing for a reader
who already knows the film and the historical narrative. Concentrate instead on identifying and
interpreting key scenes and themes which you think succeed or fail in achieving a better
understanding of an historical setting or historical event.
Since you are expected to do some background reading you will need to include a short
bibliography and notes (Chicago Style) in your paper.
