Ministry of Truth: 1984/2020 — Art At A Time Like This
* you may wish to archive the website asap in case the exhibition closes before the assignment is due.
The objective of this assignment is to present a detailed visual analysis of one billboard (of your choosing) from the exhibition (1 page) and then present a detailed interpretation (2 pages) of that same work’s imagery and (where applicable) textual content, answering how you read (interpret) the work in terms of social issues and experiences in the contemporary world.
This assignment does not call for outside research beyond visiting the artist’s website (which is provided on the exhibition webpage) to familiarize yourself with the greater scope of their work. Rather, you are asked to analyze and interpret the work of art through your own lens, presenting your thoughts about the world today.
There are many works to choose from in this exhibition. Be sure to choose one you feel you can writing compellingly about. Your response will be evaluated based on how well you analyze the work’s visual forms and connect what you see to what you understand about social issues and experiences in the contemporary world.
The visual analysis portion of the paper should consist of an address of line quality, shape and form, color, space, and texture. You may also wish to discuss the placement of the piece in relation to its surroundings in public space.
