(i.e., alcoholic anonymous, narcotic anonymous) and an Al-anon meeting/or smart recovery meeting General guidelines List of local meetings: www.scn.org/health/12step.html#general (Links to an external site.) No more than 2 individuals from LWtech may attend a session. It is highly suggested that you go in pairs Attend only open meetings, some meetings are closed. Do not attend a sexual addiction meeting (most are closed anyway). Try to avoid “court assigned/ordered” meetings. If you attend a Narcotic Anonymous (NA) meeting, avoid areas such as Pioneer Square or “rough” neighborhoods (west or eastside). Drug dealers are known to hang around these meetings. Okay to go to Christian or other religious 12 step meetings Cannot go to 12 step meetings at LWTECH (confidentiality and FERPA issues) Must dress in business dress- professional No need for name badge: Introduce yourself as a nursing student from LWTech and that you are there for learning purposes to gain a better understanding of addiction as a disease and resources for sobriety. Keep in mind attendance at meetings this quarter is required. Prepare a written paper answering the following questions. Estimate length 4-5 pages Briefly describe how the meeting(s) were conducted. How did it open and close? Was there discussion of a particular topic? What are the objectives in the 12 step program? How were they achieved in this particular meeting? Please do not repeat back the 12 steps but discuss the objectives or outcomes What is the principle psychosocial support structure? (How are the members treated by the leadership and each other?) What was the group structure? Leader present, leaderless, rotation of leader- Do you believe that the support structure as you describe it is beneficial? Why? or why not? In what ways does the spiritual aspect of a 12 step program support the attendee? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages to group support vs. individual therapy in this context? What feeling did attending this meeting generate for you? Please describe those feelings. In what ways will attendance of this group be useful in your practice as a nurse?
