All of nursing practice is based off of research which guides the profession by obtaining new knowledge and verifying previous knowledge. Research leads to changes, innovations, and new best practices in nursing. The world of research can be complicated, and it is essential for the advanced practice nurse (APN) to understand it in order to provide quality care to their patients using evidence based practices. APNs can start by understanding the different approaches to research and when to use which approach (Vinson, 2019).
Qualitative research can involve emotions, reactions, observations, and theories. This type of research obtains understanding of phenomenon without examining statistical relationships or measuring concepts. Instead, it examines people’s viewpoints on an experience. Qualitative researchers have the ability to think more abstractly and conceptually than quantitative researchers (Gray, Grove, & Sutherland, 2018, pp. 62-65; Vinson, 2019).
Qualitative research can include grounded theory, phenomenology, historical research, ethnography, and exploratory-descriptive qualitative research. These approaches are different partly due to the various disciplines of the researchers who developed them. For example, psychologists and sociologists developed phenomenological research and grounded theory research, whereas exploratory-descriptive qualitative research comes from nurses and medical professionals. Qualitative research is beneficial to nursing research because it gives the opportunity to explore human beings’ lives through their unique experiences and insights. For example, a study can use ethnography as a research method in order to collect participants’ beliefs in their own words. This can help nurses to understand their patients and their particular needs. Qualitative research also helps develop new theories and better understand cultural and social influences on health. The drawback to qualitative research is that there can be bias from the researchers since they are analyzing data in an abstract way (Gray et al., 2018, p. 62).
Quantitative research uses numerical data and statistical analysis to put research, variation, correlation, and consequences into numbers. Quantitative research can be used in nursing research to estimate the effects of an intervention, discover cause and effect, and to define groups using the scientific method (Vinson, 2019). First, quantitative research can be divided into interventional and non-interventional research. Non-interventional research, for instance, would include observational research where analysts are simply observing and measuring. Most observational research is descriptive, since it defines variables or the correlations between variables. An example of this would be a survey. In contrast, interventional research designs look at the cause-and-effects of a particular intervention. Frequently used types of interventional research are experimental and quasi-experimental. The purpose of experimental research is to evaluate the null hypothesis through application of an intervention to test subjects, but not the control group. Then, the effects or changes on dependent variables can be measured. Quasi-experimental research can be used when experimental design cannot, but its purpose is to evaluate a cause-and-effect relationship hypothesis (Gray et al., 2018, pp. 38-40).
Nursing research provides knowledge that can help guide the profession and improve care for patients. There are many different research methods to use and the appropriate method will vary depending on the purpose of the study. It is important for all nurses, but especially APNs, to learn the concepts of research and to understand what makes a quality study.
