Final Paper In sociology, the “melting pot” is a concept referring to a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous with the different elements “melting together” into a harmonious whole with a common culture. But, it is evident that Blacks were never meant to meld into the pot. The more “Blackness” that melds into the pot, the less White the broth. Simply review Jim Crow laws. The research paper America = White?, written by Dr. Thierry Devos and Dr. Mahzarin R. Banaji begins with: In 1937, the Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation of New York invited the Swedish sociologist Gunnar Myrdal to study the “Negro problem” in America. The main message from Myrdal’s now classic study was captured in the title of his book, An American Dilemma (1944). Contrary to expectations that White Americans would express prejudice without compunction, Myrdal found that even sixty years ago in the deep South, White citizens clearly experienced a moral dilemma, “an ever-raging conflict” between strong beliefs in equality and liberty for all and the reality of their actions and their history. (3) Today, could one argue that White Americans are experiencing “an ever-raging [internal] conflict” pertaining to the morality of the actions of their ancestors and the ideals of America? Are Black Americans still considered a “problem”? From the Black perspective, write an essay that explains and argues if this internal conflict has been settled and if so, how. If it has not been settled, is there evidence that there has been an effort to settle the dilemma. The final paper must cite at least seven (7) sources.
