Final Project is a written report in which you will need to analyze a film (or parts of the film), applying what you have learnt from communication theories. Each project must relate specifically to at least three different theories.
Main components of the Final Project
A. Selection. Your first task is to find a film that shows a significant social, cultural, political, interpersonal, etc., problem. Although the film doesn’t have to be one of the best or classics, find something that is generally recognized as a good and substantial movie. Here are some examples: Good Will Hunting, Annie Hall, 12 Angry Men, Casablanca, No Country for Old Men, Volver, Nebraska, The Color Purple, Amistad, Billy Elliot, Amarcord, 12 Years a Slave, Roma, Sideways, and many others….
Once you have the specific film, you will have to find the key issue (or issues) that you want to use for the paper. You may select a specific relationship between two characters in the movie or see a person or group person navigating organizations, group relationships, or political environment.
B. Project Report. 6-8 pages, about 2500-3000 words, double-spaced typed report.
This part should include the following:
A brief description of the film (including the title, year, director, etc.).
A detailed description of the situation/conflict you will analyze.
Description and explanation of any necessary background and related issues (the length of this section will depend on the case you have chosen).
Identification and description of the three theories you will use.
The application of the theories to the film. How do the theories explain the situation in the movie? For example, if you are interested in history and politics, you could select the movie “Selma” and then analyze the campaign of Martin Luther King applying such theories as Agenda Setting, Spiral of Silence, and the Rhetorical tradition theories. If you prefer an interpersonal context, you could select “Sideways” and use a numbare of interpersonal theories to the friendship between the two main characters in the movie.
A bibliography with a minimum of 5 sources. Your main resource in preparing and writing the paper will be your textbook, but you should use other material as well. There is a multitude of books and articles on the subject.
