For your first paper, please choose one of the texts assigned for work of one of the artists discussed and produce a three page paper that puts the ideas of the text in conversation with the artwork. This can be done in a number of ways. One option is to focus on a specific artist or work and employ the ideas from the texts to help you in your analysis. Alternatively, you can focus on the arguments in the texts and engage with the artwork as it helps you develop your ideas. A third option is to engage with the problem of representing the work in language and engage the texts and artwork in a non-hierarchical manner (not putting either the texts or the work in service of the other). This last option is, admittedly, the more difficult one and requires a more reflexive and performative approach to your own writing, that is, it requires close attention to your writing as a practice and not so much as a form of communication. The Gail Tremblay and Paul Chaat Smith pieces we read for week 1 provide good examples of art writing in this sense. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to cover the text or artist’s body of work exhaustively, so my suggestion is to choose an aspect of each that speaks to you in some way and perform a close reading and analysis. It will be necessary to provide some context, but this will have to be carefully apportioned and balanced in relation to your own reading and experience of the work. While this is an open-ended prompt, it is important to tailor your response to the page limitation. I suggest writing your own prompt or tailored thesis before beginning. Feel free to use you reading response on the Discussions Forum as a jumping off point.
