By this point in the semester, students have received a broad introduction to the field of Recent American History and the basic training of a historian, and this assignment will test those skills. For the final project, students will assume the role as a history professor and create an original assignment that any instructor could use in any recent United States history survey course. Students will create an assignment that will assess what information is important in this course and what skills a college student should be able to demonstrate at this the end of the first semester.
This assignment has two parts.
First, this assignment needs to cover a specific period in recent United States history, 1860-1980. You need to pick one and clearly define the period with a name and the dates (Progressive era: 1890-1920). You can create any type of assignment but should consider critical thinking as one of the outcomes you hope students will gain by the end of the course and assignment. The assignment could be an exam, a short or long writing assignment, a short critical thinking exercise on a primary source or movie, just to name a few. Your assignment should have clear directions and should state what the assignment is and how students can be successful at completing the assignment, and how it relates to history during this class over the course of semester. I recommend looking over lots of your previous assignments to see how instructors created a writing prompt or a rubric. Use those prompts to guide you in creating this assignment. Finally, you do not have to complete the assignment, only create it.
Second, you need to write a 3-4-page essay or write up that explains and/or justifies why you created the assignment, why you think it’s relevant to the historical period you chose and the possible learning outcomes when the assignment is completed. And, how will students use this skill set or outcome on future assignments in college?
Both of the assignments need to use 1” margins, have a title, need to be grammatically correct with proper syntax, and polished before turning in. YOU MUST TURN IN A DIGITAL COPY through Blackboard on the final exam date and time.
Make sure you put both assignments in one (1) document…do not submit separate documents. Put the assignment first and then your explanation of the document second.
