I just need these questions answered by each question. I’ve also attached supplemental readings attached, as well as links to refer to the questions. Instructions: What’s happening in the social world (our current situation in this pandemic/Covid-19), analyzing how the social interacts/influences how you interpret and understand your personal experience, and how each of you might take that analysis to put forth alternative visions of our future. Furthermore, the visions that you have for the future should be evaluated with respect to whether or not they reflect the values and ideals of democracy, fairness, and dignity for all. I want you to write as if you are declaring on how we should form a “more perfect union” to paraphrase a part of the constitution. I just want to remind you that each of us needs to move away from thinking and writing only to satisfy classroom assignments. Instead, you need to think and write with respect to helping, saving, and supporting HUMANITY! The system of schooling has diminished your capacity as “free thinkers” and turned many of us into “silent partners” in commissioning the way our society operates. We need to reverse this course immediately as learned people. Here are some questions for us to consider: We’ve talked about the problems with the word “ally” and how it doesn’t include the “ally” in the fight but rather adjacent to it. That said, how do we reach out to the cisgender heterosexual white male? Do we even need to? They’re the ones on top of a system way older than all of us that have been oppressing people in minority groups. How do we gain equal footing with that? Or bring them down a peg? How do we convince them to let other groups become empowered while giving up their own power? If we don’t challenge them enough, our problems will be erased, dismissed, or completely ignored. If we challenge too hard, they’ll push back hard with over a hundred years of systemic oppression backing them. In what ways can we be more detailed in describing how each social category we are a part of informs and effects one another? (ie. Race, Gender, Sexuality, Class, etc.) How do we face the problems in one social category without diminishing or dismissing the others? Can we get to a society with extremely little to no discrimination? Is it even possible? If so, then what exactly have we been doing wrong for hundreds of years? Can we talk about age and generations more as a social factor in our lives without insulting or disregarding one another? There are people alive today who fought for racial, gender, and sexual equality decades ago. There are people still alive today who fought in WWII. How do we talk about the problems of the baby boomers and how they informed our current society without dismissively saying “ok boomer?” How do we talk about Gen X’s issues without calling them “slackers?” How do we talk about Millennials in any meaningful way without saying they “killed [insert long-standing institution or industry here]?” When, in reality, those industries died on their own because nobody could afford to buy into them anymore. How do we talk about Gen Z without dismissing them as “youths” who don’t care about anything? How do we tear down an oppressive system without harming and damaging the oppressed who are still benefiting from it in some small way? To be more specific, I keep hearing about “Medicare for All” and I’m a diabetic (pre-existing condition) who benefitted from the ACA. I recognize that the ACA has flaws and that MfA would probably be way more beneficial for me. But if I lose ACA coverage without easily and immediately transitioning to a better system, I may not have healthcare… and then I die… so much for helping out the person who needed it the most. Maybe my fears and worries are unfounded in this. Medical coverage may not be the best example. In class, we talked about how the middle class has become comfortable with capitalism and doesn’t exactly view worker exploitation as their fight. So, how do we dismantle an oppressive system that so many people’s lives are tied to without destroying those lives in the process? I feel like, if we can figure this question out, we’d have an easier time convincing the middle class that they’re in an exploitative system too. Things to think about and answer as well: What are some positives and negatives to having an inherent identity…for individuals as well as groups? How do we combat this sort of maneuver made by the NFL? Can individuals and groups be just as effective with a fluid identity?
