Paper #4 Comparative Essay Due Dec 17th on Turnitin.com
This five to six page essay asks you to conduct a literary analysis of one of three poems from Nikky Finney’s Head Off & Split. You may choose to write on “Concerto no. 11: Condoleeza and the Chickering” (36-7), “Heirloom” (52-3) or “Negroes with Guns” (72-75). You will be required to evaluate the role of allusion, mood, tone, and the role of the speaker in addition to any literary devices like alliteration, irony and metaphor that you find relevant.

Proper analysis of poetry identifies author and the collection from which the poem comes before shifting to announce the title of the poem and a brief assessment of the poem. For example, having declared Finney an award winning poet and professor you might conclude your introduction thusly: “Finney’s “Cattails” is a poem about the risks inherent with falling in love. The analysis of this poem will focus on the many allusion to flowers she makes as well her use of extended metaphor throughout.” Note that this thesis does identify what kind of extended metaphor is at play, merely that she uses this literary technique. The analysis that follows would identify the figure at the center of the extended metaphor (in this case, a car), explain why she chose that metaphor (there are lots of love songs about cars including the Beatles “Baby You Can Drive My Car”) and ultimately assess the effectiveness of Finney use of this device and what she accomplishes by doing so.
Your paper should follow a coherent, unified, logical, and progressive structure. Your body paragraphs should address one element of the poem each and conclude with transitional generalizations that allow you to move logically to another element. Develop each of your topic sentences fully with discussion and evidence from the text; make each of your main ideas lead logically into the next main idea.
