Prompt: Compare a Greek mythology to a mythology in pop culture from the last 30 years. This can be mythology created in books, movies, TV shows, video games, and other forms of pop culture. How are they similar? Why are they similar? What portions of Greek mythology were used in the creation of this modern version?
Directions:
1) In a well-written, well-argued essay, prove that a Greek mythology has helped influence and create a modern mythology in pop culture.
2) This essay must be 6 or more paragraphs, and must include an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
3) You must have 3 or more sources in the Works Cited. Additional sources will come from the books, movies, TV shows, video games, and other forms of pop culture.
4) At least one or more of your sources must come from an expert and/or critic regarding pop culture and mythology. For example, Neil Gaiman, creator of the Sandman comic series, would be a good source to look at because he talks about how we continue to create mythologies based on the stories from the past. There are many mythology experts that write about then compared to now. Please search for those experts.
5) There are multiple ways to approach this essay. You could start by picking your favorite Greek myth, and then find a pop culture reference to compare it to. Or, you can start with your favorite pop culture story and then find the Greek myth that matches. These approaches will both become easier if you do the research first.
6) You have the ability to be creative here. Yes, Star Wars relies on the hero’s journey, and defines the nature of good vs. evil. Star Wars, for many young people, is the gateway to mythology. However, other movies and media do this too. The John Wick series (movies) is building a mythology. The Harry Potter (books) use world building and mythology building at the same time. Even TV shows, such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and The Good Place use mythology as the backbone for storytelling.
