The final paper for this class consists of two parts: Part I: ?This section addresses the question “What is a life worth living?” by choosing one of the many traditions/philosophies we’ve discussed in class. For example, what does Sartre, Aristotle, Aquinas, Plato, or others we’ve read say makes a life worth living? In addressing this question, be sure to describe the aspects of a good life (tripartite structure): According to this tradition, what does it mean for life: I. to go well? What is important in terms of life’s circumstances? Are there any resources (i.e., education, upbringing, needs met) that we must have in order to successfully pursue this life?) (Circumstantial Aspect) II. to be led well? What ?do? we need to do in order to lead a life worth living? (Agential Aspect) III. to feel good? and does it matter? Might the life worth living be miserable or involve suffering of some sort? What is the affective goal? What is the good life supposed to feel like?) (Affective Aspect) Provide ?at least two substantive quotes? from the author/philosophy you choose and use the quotes to help fill out and develop your answers to these three aspects/questions. Last, explain in a good bit of detail WHY you think this vision of a good/meaningful life appeals to you most? For example, explain what is “good” about this vision to you? Do you plan to live this vision out and, if so, how? If not, why not? Part II: ?Pick ?one? of the 2 prompts below as your final paper topic. 1. Compare and contrast Aristotle’s moral theory with utilitarianism OR Kantianism. ?Identify and explain at least 4 major differences? between the two theories. In addition, ?discuss 3 pros/benefits and 3 cons/drawbacks? of each theory (virtue and utilitarianism or Kantianism). Which theory do you think best captures what is ethical action and/or a good life why? 2. Compare and contrast Sartre’s and Charles Taylor’s views on authenticity. ?Identify and explain at least 4 major differences? between the two theories. Be sure to explain how Satre thinks existence precedes essence, what it means to be authentic, and why he thinks freedom and responsibility are important. For Charles Taylor, be sure to explain what the three elements of authenticity are. To this end, describe what he thinks our “dialogical nature” is and what “horizons of significance” are.
