What/who is your closes competitor and why is your idea different?

As we have discussed, food entrepreneurship can often create solutions to challenges within the food system. In this assignment, you will create a service/product to meet the needs of one of the challenges of the food system discussed throughout the semester (or another food issue of your choosing after consulting with the instructors). The overall objective of your essay is to create a compelling case as to why your idea deserves start-up funding. Your written assignment should be made up of the following sections:
• A description of your product/service and the food systems problem it will help address
• Who the target consumer of your product/service would be and why your idea would appeal to that demographic. You must select a target consumer (school cafeteria managers, college students, vegans, etc. not ‘general public’). You should also include what city/state/region you would be located in and your reason for that selection.
• Your product/service does not need to make a profit (you could be proposing a non-profit organization to solve a food problem), but it does need to be sustainable.
• An overview of current competition in the market you are trying to enter, and what your product/service offers that is distinct from others in the market. Are there other non-profits already in this space? What/who is your closes competitor and why is your idea different?
• What are the limitations of your product? What are potential barriers to the success of your service/product?
• A <200 word blurb that you could use to market your service/product to potential funders on a crowdsourcing website like Kickstarter.
Because of the nature of the assignment students can address the above bullet points in sections separated by subtitles. However, a strong essay will still include an introduction with a thesis statement providing an overall argument for why your service or product is important and be well-organized and easy to follow. The word count for this assignment is 1,500 to 2000 words.
