You will be viewing and writing a response paper on two categories of music performance —(1) large-scale event(s) such as a symphony orchestra, opera, or full chorus; and (2) small-scale event(s)such as a chamber music ensemble (vocal or instrumental), solo recital(vocal or instrumental), organ recital, or early-music consort(usually from the Baroque period or earlier). Put both concerts into a single paper, but write about one“scale”at a time. (OPTIONS ARE LISTED IN THE DOCUMENT ATTACHED)
• Objective aspects you must consider:
-the specific works, composers, and style periods involved;
-the performers(for example, conductor and orchestra)and venues involved;
-the videos’ timings, adding up to 75+ minutes each for large-scale and small-scale concerts;
-how performers behave; how they interact with each other; what you imagine their backgrounds to be;
-anything else that occurs to you.
Subjective aspects you must consider:
-any musical elements that you hear (keep a basic outline of our elements —all discussed in Weekly Units 1 and 2—close at hand (I’VE ATTACHED WEEK 1 AND 2 NOTES);
-how you respond emotionally to the music; Any compositions or concerts you liked more than others, and why; does this tell you anything about yourself?
-how these concerts compare to others (of any kind!) you have attended in the past;
-if viewing classical music is a new experience for you; anything else that occurs to you.
-You will be viewing a total of 75 minutes each for the large-scale and small-scale requirements (in other words, 150 minutes total viewing —equal to 2 and a half hours). In case you’re interested, this is much less time than live-concert attendance would entail!
-The suggested videos vary in length. Timings are listed next to the event. If you wish, you can cover the entire 75-minute requirement (each, for large-and small-scale) with a single concert, or by choosing multiple videos adding up to or exceeding that duration.
-Note that the 150-minute requirement is only a minimum! If you choose videos that run longer than the totals (75 + 75 minutes), you must view all videos in their entirety. Treat these as you would an actual concert.
