Your paper should be 1250-1750 words (approx 4-6 pages). It is to be submitted, ONLY AS A WORD.DOC (or OPEN OFFICE, .ODT) on Canvas by midnight Tues. 12/15 (the night before our final exam). You must also submit a one or two paragraph write-up of what you intend to do in your paper by midnight of Sunday 12/6. In this pre-assignment, you should indicate what prompt you will address and what texts or films you will discuss, while framing the broad perspective you will take on the question at issue. Choose one of the following two prompts 1) This paper invites you to approach Apocalypse Now in tandem with one of the related texts or films on the syllabus: Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Nicholas Roeg’s film version of Conrad’s novel, or Pontecorvo’s Battle of Algiers. You should investigate how Coppola’s film treats one of the following themes: history, colonialism and postcolonialism, or the other (the “native” and/or “primitive”—not necessarily the same). Attending to the related material should set in relief Coppola’s treatment. Your paper thus should contain at least two substantial comparisons of scenes, storylines, themes, cinematography, and/or other features of Coppola’s film and the presentation you select. In all these cases, you should attend to the formal aspects of the items in question as well as their content. Be sure to offer citations that you paraphrase if you are working with a text or specific descriptions of scenes (and the time when they appear), which you further interpret, when discussing films. 2) In this class, we have watched films and read texts relating to three historical situations: a) the Belgian possession and exploitation of the Congo; b) the war between the US and some of the Vietnamese people; c) the Algerian revolution. This paper asks you to pick one of these topics and reflect on its presentation in a relevant text or film. More specifically, you should research in some depth the actual historical occurrences to which the film or novel alludes; you should then note how the film or text in question treats them. Be sure in the latter case to choose at least two specific scenes and take note of formal features—how the film is shot or the novel written—as well the story and its details. Be aware that if you choose Vietnam and Apocalypse Now, you will face certain difficulties, since the events of the film do not claim to directly refer to actual historical occurrences. Accordingly, you will have to select parallel or exemplary occurrences, such as the My Lai Massacre, to pursue that topic.
